HEADSTONE PROJECT SA by Ian Hopley

Ian Hopley is currently the Investigations Manager for the Headstone Project SA, a voluntary organisation which is dedicated to locating World War One veterans buried in unmarked graves throughout South Australia with a view to placing proper, military headstones on gravesites to recognise their service to Australia. He is also a trustee, executive member and SA representative of the 21/14 Battalion Association.

Ian Hopley was a Victorian police officer for 32 years spending most of his career as a detective in the criminal investigation area at both regional levels and in the State Crime Squads. He was also a child abuse investigator in the community policing squads and a team leader and senior investigator with the Victoria Police Child Exploitation Unit. Ian holds a Diploma of Management, a Diploma of Justice Administration, a Certificate IV in Training & Assessment and a Certificate III in Investigative Services. He is currently a Justice of the Peace for South Australia and volunteer role player at the SA Police Academy. A Churchill Fellow and Queen Elizabeth Trust scholarship winner, Ian has travelled the world extensively studying and lecturing on child abuse investigation and prevention strategies.

Ian was a permanent, in-country police operational adviser and supervisor trainer in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands for over 5 years. Ian instigated and co-established PACE PNG (People Against Child Exploitation) and was awarded a life membership of the organisation. Prior to retirement from operational police duties, Ian served as an internal corruption detective in both the corruption investigation and professional standards divisions of the Victoria Police Ethical Standards Department (ESD) Ian co-established CACET Global (Child abuse consultancy education and training) in South Australia in 2008 and remained as an Executive Director and trainer until 2017 conducting child protection seminars and training courses throughout Australia and overseas at both introductory and advanced levels. Ian is now an independent child protection consultant and trainer and is also a consultant to State Security Services (SA) and Northern Territory Security Solutions.
