Migration Museum

Missing Voices

Visit the Migration Museum to hear from Australian Muslims who have shared their stories in their own words and with their own voices and gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of Australian identities and the global religion of Islam.

Over the course of twelve months, the Islamic Museum of Australia in Melbourne collected deeply personal oral histories of 70 Australian Muslims from all walks of life across Victoria. Missing Voices presents these first-hand testimonies through painting, illustration, video, photography and text. While Muslims have migrated to Australia since the 1860s (or earlier), over a third are now Australian-born, leading to a rich diversity of peoples, cultures and societies that transcends geographical boundaries. The exhibition offers a more nuanced picture of Islam and Australian Muslims than you will get from media soundbites and news headlines, so come in and explore that diversity at the Migration Museum today.

Crafting Memories
Our Community Banners collection, which began in 1985, represents the memories, hopes, and dreams of over 40 diverse cultural groups from across the globe. The Banners project was instrumental in building the Museum’s earliest relationships with South Australia’s culturally diverse communities, and was an opportunity for communities to demonstrate their skills while reflecting on their experiences of migration and settlement. There are now 46 banners in the collection.
